Wow! A month traveling with the St. Joe’s Women’s basketball and softball teams in respective tournaments has taken me up and down the east coast. I worked the roles of assistant coach, trainer, finance coordinator, personal assistant, and baggage handler. It was “fun work” in the opportunity provided to me by the athletic department of St.Joe’s. Both teams may not have won many games, but the process of the growing together as a team certainly outlined the lessons each day had to offer.

I had a few hours each day to get my training in, but it was mostly in the wee hours before I had to focus my full effort into what the teams needed. I managed about 5 hours of sleep a night, but the experience kept my energy levels high enough to finish each day. Power workout of the month: 2 hour run/ 2 hour bike in 75 degree heat and humidity of Florida – in the morning! A soaker!

Back in NYC now and my training shifts to a more disciplined and focused approach. I will be racing the Boston Marathon on April 19th, but mostly geared as a training run. However, it will be an emotional event for me. I am running in memory of Martin Macapugay, a TEAMMC member who passed away last September. Martin got a late start to running (in his 50′s), but he loved traveling around the world to race marathons. His goal was to qualify for Boston and I would often help coach him in his training. Unfortunately he never did get his chance. My last encounter with him was biking home from work in the pouring rain, only to see him on the 59th St Bridge on his way home from a long run.

This one’s for you and so will be the finishers’ medal.

From Boston, I will continue building towards my ultimate goal of 2004: Ironman Idaho in late June.

Hello Springtime!
